This page was last edited on 23 Juneloydon This is probably one of the most interesting and important books I’ve ever read. The context changes, but the gist and the meaning are invariable. Too loueon on the past, they were at the same time too complacent about their present and far too optimistic in regard to the future – to us!
It speaks to a reader devoted to truth and careful analysis who holds the author and the reader to superlative standards. Also, I wish I knew french or latin for the random excerpts he quoted from other books.
The phenomena which we now explain in terms of this subconscious activity had either to be denied altogether, or else attributed to the action of nonhuman spirits.
There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Crowd-intoxication reduces them to a condition of infrapersonal and antisocial irresponsibility. Non facile, ma caldamente raccomandabile. The final symptom of herd-intoxication is a maniacal violence.
As well, the notion of demonic possession is placed into historical and scientific perspective. He examines the evidence offered in the trial in light of that standard.
I don’t understand how a scene where a guy is wrongly accused of witchcraft and burned alive at the stake can be made so undramatic and dull. The professional moralists who inveigh against drunkenness are strangely silent about the equally disgusting vice of herd-intoxication – of downward self-transcendence into subhumanity by the process of getting together in a mob.
Had I wanted to read about Aldous Huxley and his endless musings, ideas and opinions on theology, spirituality, politics, etc. But the second and one would sadly guess alldous commoner variety takes those who indulge in it to a lower level of subhumanity, evokes the consciousness, and leaves the memory of a complete alienation, than does the first.
Consider, for example, the way of rhythmic movement. This explains the chapters about mistycism, and the Appendix.
Maybe I just haven’t read enough. Dead drunk, the Negro was an easy prey. Huxley’s work is less directly political than Miller’s — it’s more of an anthropological and psychological analysis of why people act the way they do. It is a very clever book, sometimes too clever.
Becoming a man of hypocrisy his enemies multiply until a cabal is formed in his honor; with the sole mission of destroying Urbain. In the personages of other times and alien cultures we recognize our all too human selves and yet are aware, as we do so, that the frame of reference within which we do our living has changed, since their day, out of all recognition, that propositions which seemed axiomatic then are now untenable and that what we regard as the most self-evident postulates could not, at an earlier period, find entrance into even the most boldly speculative mind.
There is no reason to believe that all such wills that all “entities” existing outside the physical world as we know it are well meaning and nice. It is time apprehended as one damned thing after another.
The Devils of Loudun
The fact of being one of a multitude delivers a man from his consciousness of being an insulated self and carries him down into a less than personal realm, where there are no responsibilities, no right or wrong, no alduos for thought or judgement or discrimination – only a strong vague sense of togetherness, only a shared excitement, a collective alienation.
Devils passed out of the picture; but along thee the devils went any kind of serious consideration of the phenomena once attributed to diabolic agency. One day I’ll have to find the movie based on this book by Ken Russell.
The sexuality of Eden and the sexuality of the sewer – both of them have power to carry the individual beyond the limits of his or her insulated self. To read Huxley’s non-fiction gives an even better insight into his talent as an author, and the quality of his writing as passages aldus this text are as delightful to read as poetry.

But that’s not really what it’s about, either. Meanwhile, new and previously undreamed-of devices for exciting mobs have been invented. Tbe the case when a true story is more complex and amazing than any fiction can be.
And when the huxldy run into thousands, or tens of thousands, the likelihood of God being there, in the consciousness of each individual, declines almost to the vanishing point.
I first read this book in high school and it made a great impression on me. It happened in 17th-century France: Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. Rather, it is an incredibly insightful meditation on the pious life, the ordeals of the devout, and the mysterious workings of God. Ken Russell’s film adaptation of the book, entitled The Devilsalso deserves note as a fine piece of work which manages to survey all three levels of the narrative outlined above.
It’s important to remember that though times have changed, we are the same loudoon. This was a good move. In the United States there are probably at least a million desperate alcoholics, besides a much larger number of very heavy drinkers whose disease has not yet become mortal.
