It kept me reading–I finished it in just over a day, but it didn’t really captivate me, if that makes sense. Shaping the World from the Shadows: He was interviewed for the book and says it’s been wildly misinterpreted, especially since the chapter he features in was excerpted by Soldier of Fortune magazine, with editorial changes made by someone there that exaggerated his personal role in the fighting.
Those 17 or so RPG warheads that did hit us directly didn’t do much at all because they hadn’t been armed. Some who served with him express doubts. This book seemed to be a fiction novel rather than a first hand account of the war.

This is an excellent memoir, but recognize that it does start to have a political tinge toward the end. Jun 29, Jason rated it it was amazing.
Dillard Johnson says he never made that claim. He says the criticism is mostly unfair. Johnsno doesn’t come off as some kind of superhuman warrior.

Once I cracked it open, I couldn’t put it down. And Charlie Horse really deserves, Crazy Horse, the unit I was in, really deserves the credit for what went on over there as far as the battle and the confirmed kills. For instance the company’s New York Post carried an “exclusive” on June 23 that begins:.
