There are some humorous parts like how she keeps going on about being a “gentle lady” and a “gentle maiden” but, other than a few things here and there, it was just OK. And splendro, after Madelyne and Duncan were married the book did seem to slow down, it became just a little boring until they ended up in the King’s Court.

She was all over the place. Mac I think you can like Eva Ibbotson’s books. I do love Garwood’s hysterical historicals, especially this one! Madelyne is sweet and innocent — all she wants is to be loved and to feel safe. I like all of her historical novels, some I julke, and several are in my re-read collection.

Amazon Second Chance Pass it on, trade it in, give it a second life. Who knew that his cruelty would be the cause for Madelyn finding love at the hands of his enemy, Baron Wexton? It is both heart and pain, funny dialogue, everyday events in the castle, witty, charming, seductive and cute tender.
As I mentioned earlier though, the last third of the story was my favorite part. The pace of their relationship was perfect and when they finally got together, oh the feels.
Why did I keep reading? This alternated between focusing on Madelyne and Duncan in 3rd person narrative. It had just the right amount of passion and reverence for a book of this genre.

A fierce warrior for a hero 4. Thankfully there was enough tenderness to keep it from being overdone in this book, but Duncan and Madelyn still emotionally held back from each other a little too long for my taste, and splwndor confusion over their feelings for one another seemed a bit forced to me.

I liked both characters and how they interated together. Yes view spoiler [There are times when they both push away as well as pursue the relationship. As I’m beginning to expect from Garwood’s heroines, Madelyne was a bit ditzy and clumsy, but her kindness and courage won me over. This story hearkens back to the wonderful historicals of my youth, yet it is as fresh today as when it was written some 30 years ago. I really liked her journey from the shy virgin to embracing her passionate nature, and found it to be very believable and well-crafted.

This is Madelyne and Duncan’s story. Not perfect per se, but perfect for me. There was potential for conflict Lady Eleanor, escaping, etc but the author never explores them. Never again will I disgrace my mind with such folly.

I don’t remember the last time I just enjoyed simply reading the book, the sentences, the dialogue. How ever good the story, how ever great the characters, it is the talent behind the pen that makes a good book GREAT.
